Giving Facebook a Shot

A lot of you have heard me say I don’t use Facebook because I don’t believe in giving away my content. I still believe that, and I won’t be posting much original content on Facebook, but I’m changing my tune slightly. Twitter is my social media site of choice. It’s not everyone’s, though, and I’ve decided it’s best to come to where you guys are. 34,000+ of you are joining in on the conversation over at Twitter. 2,000+ of you have friended me on Facebook, and a lot of those 2,000 people have told me they tried Twitter and don’t like it. I can’t understand why, but that’s a discussion for the comments! So, today I logged into Facebook for the first time in months.

Now, if you want to get a hold of me quickly, Twitter is still the best way to go!! I have TweetDeck open the majority of every day, but I can’t guarantee a quick response on Facebook. I also probably won’t be poking people.

I’m on facebook… but have updates sent to my Blackberry, since Twitter removed the TXT Message notification, this is now my preferential choice.

I love the security lockdown ability of Facebook – you can block or show bits and pieces unlike MySpace which tended to be an all or nothing block.

Started with Facebook, then started using Twitter. I have found more old friends on Facebook, than on Twitter. I have yet to get the two in sync.

Based on my observations of people trying out Twitter and my personal experience with it, the problems are:

1) You need an app to keep track of incoming messages;
2) You get bombarded with too many Tweets from people you’re following (there’s no “digest” option;
3) The way it works is either invasive (stuff pops up while concentrating) or inefficient (for those not using Twitterific or some competing app).

I don’t usually want need >2 non-direct tweets a day for anyone I’m following. For those who are following thousands of people, I don’t get how Twitter even works…and I’m pretty tech-savvy.

I actually use both networks quite often. FaceBook is where I go to catch up with my theater cronies, whereas, twitter is reserved for my tech type pals. I tend to compartmentalize my life, so FB and twitter are both useful.

I find them to be complementary because you can add the applications in FaceBook to show your Twitter or FriendFeed posts. Visa-versa there are apps that can post your FaceBook status to Twitter.

If you tweak the applications, it can make alot of sense because the two systems overlap, but do not totally cover each other. Some people use one but not the other.

I use both Twitter and FB but for completely different parts of my life. FB is for my social life – allows me to be in touch with family, friends, old college roommates, etc.

My twitter acct is completely different. I only know 2-3 of the ppl I follow. The rest I follow for a professional reason. It’s where I learn about new technology, new books, new ideas. Much more interesting, amusing, and enlightening than FB. I’m frequently bored by the FB updates that I read.

I think that facebook has heaps of advantages over twitter in the way in which you can communicate with people. The quality of interaction on facebook is much deeper too as you usually know each person in your friends list much more then those on twitter

I use both. To me, Facebook is for communicating and sharing with a more intimate network of friends. Facebook’s privacy settings lend itself well to that purpose. Twitter is for participating in broader, less personal conversations. To analogize, Facebook is like hanging out with friends at a party. Twitter is like talking with colleagues at a conference.

You can actually sync Twitter and Facebook with FriendFeed.com you can also sync other platforms as well. One post in FriendFeed and that’s it.

I got LinkedIn immediately. Didn’t get either Twitter or Facebook until everyone I know pushed me into it… Now I’m doing both. Each has its own value, but Twitter is kind of overwhelming and hard to control. Facebook seems to have just as much traffic, but it’s easier to manage.

Not a very well qualified opinion, I know, but those are my first impressions…

I am following you on Twitter since only a few weeks. I must admit I’ve not been on neither Twitter nor Face book until 2009. So I’m trying both now!

My question to you Calli, how do you get the reply I send to you on twitter if you are not following me?

Face book, from what I can see, permit me to have comments on people who are friends with me (and vice versa). I do not post a lot on neither network, for now I’m exploring them!!

i am on both. Facebook is more of a personal webpage where you can link in friends and family.. keep track of what each other are doing and you can share things you like: music, video, clubs, causes. facebook is a personal statement about yourself. Twitter seems like some sort of instant message (the text length is limited (you can’t right a book). it seems like a big continuous Instant message (chat room). to be honest i only joined Twitter because i am a Dave Matthews fan and heard he was on Twitter, and i was able to actually communicate directly with him once.. was cool. But since then I have seen some good features of Twitter as kind of a news/technology/information feed.. and i see that you can provide links.. somehow Twitter is just not as “graphic” – it doesn’t seem designed as a personal webpage replete with photo albums, etc.. i guess there is room for both.

I am twitter all the way, I think facebook is just an over blown myspace. It is too confusing and there is just too much crap going on. I like the simplicity of twitter and I like not having to load pictures, write on walls, be poked, have things thrown at me, keep up with all the new apps, answer mail, and still try and find time to write stuff just for facebook, its exhausting and does not seem worth it to me. I think facebook will eventually go the way of myspace, but things like twitter are here for the long haul, merely for its simplicity.

LOVE THE SHOW, been a big fan for a long time!

I use both Facebook and Twitter, but Twitter seems to have more professional interest. Linkedin groups seem to be getting more interest than the Facebook groups I have tried so far.

Definitely agree with Anne and Niki. I personally grab onto any new tech fad, mostly to reserve my username. I’ve resorted to updating ping.fm with a sms in order to update both twitter and facebook. I spend tons of time on facebook to coordinate events with friends, and catching mice on MouseHunt, but almost no time reading the status updates because they are more ‘common’. Twitter, though, is my status focus because I’m exposed to alternate opinions and news. My view of twitter is of an unprivate instant messenger service, where facebook is more like the local coffee shop…you hang out and talk with a select few, but most things you say can potentially be overheard.

My tweets are more in response to others.
I do more status stuff in fb.

The real question is how do you know when your random thoughts have crossed the line from cute to annoying.

I am on both I can have longer conversations with my old friends and keep up with them better on Facebook. I use twiiter to update my status and to make random comments through out the day.

I am on both. I tweet and it updates facebook, and i have a majority of my conversations about my tweets on face book because i hate seeing tons of @replys on twitter

I use Facebook primarily for close friends and family. But really, I barely use it at all.
I use Twitter mostly for professional type communication, and to be involved in the web community.

With regard to “giving away content to Facebook”… I don’t get it. How do you think you’re doing this by being part of Facebook? Try using a search engine to find me on Facebook

Ditto all of what Japh said. FB and Twitter are “just tools” so you can use them how you like, but I use FB to keep up with personal friends old and new, and Twitter to interact with online communities and personalities that share my interests. Even if I were as popular as Cali I wouldn’t “befriend” anyone on FB that didn’t know personally; I think the “friend” feature is for actual friends and FB features like “events” and “fan pages” should be sufficient for promotional things, such as bringing together GeekBrief fans.

I’ve moved mostly to FB because it connects me to people that I actually know (or at least met). I use the FF app in FB on occasion and have fallen off of monitoring Twitter. Like several posts above, I view Twitter as something more for professional and non-personal communication.

I use both, but for different reasons. One nice feature of Facebook is that you can configure cross-posting between it and Twitter. I.e., enable the Twitter app on FB, and your Twitter posts will appear there, too. (The trick is to learn to begin your Twitter posts with a lower case verb so that they make sense on FB.)

I’ve been using Twitter for some time and just started using Facebook. Posting updates on both separately was a pain. Most of my posts are done quickly via iPhone. Found a little app that hits both (and more) in one quick way. http://www.ping.fm Its in Beta but works great. Anyways, thought i’d share

I use both. My Facebook profile is set to private and I only really connect with Friends and Family to share photos etc.

My twitter account (@jwheelhouse) is different, its open to the whole world so I only post things on there that I would be happy for everyone to know. Twitter also enables me to join in with others that I would not normally be able to using Facebook.

Of the two I have twitter open all day – like IM but I only drop into Facebook on occasion – like email.

I use both but keep them somewhat seperate. FB for family and people I know or have known in my life. Twitter more for chatting with other interesting people. BrightKite for cross posting random photos.

I use both too. I wasn’t on Facebook until recently when an old friend from high school mentioned it. So I created and account and before I knew it, most of the people I remember from school were my friends again! Pretty cool. But that’s all I use it for. Just a way to keep up with my old friends. Twitter is where I post my “here and now” stuff. Something I just saw, what I’m doing at the moment, random thoughts and questions that popped into my head. I also use Twitter because my truck driver husband can follow along using Twitter’s SMS notifications and I can follow him. I neat way to keep each other posted on what’s going on with our individual lives while we’re not together. I hate Myspace. I have a few friends who are exclusive to Myspace… I don’t really keep up with them that much anymore.

You might want to research what Facebook’s most recent policy is about stage names, since Cali isn’t your real name. You’ve already got more than 2,000 friends there now, and if they lock the account, all those new connections would be lost.

I use and love both and don’t see them as competing products. Facebook allows me to connect with those I know already and/or will likely connect with in person. The rich feature set of FB goes far beyond what you can do with Twitter. Twitter allows me to keep up with news from blogs, companies, products, interest groups etc. as well as personal friends, “internet acquaintances,” follow trends and participate in ad hoc conversations. Both are awesome tools which I use multiple times a day.

Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner,I found that to be more helpful well let me know how it turns out.
