Geek Brief – The Final Episode

Neal and I started Geek Brief over four years ago, on December 23rd, 2005. We had every intention of making it our full time jobs, and together with Mevio, we were able to achieve that goal very quickly. It’s been an amazing four years, ALL because of you guys, the Geek Brief family and community.

Early on in the show, we partnered with Mevio (then PodShow). It was a partnership that was beneficial to everyone involved, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities! Partnerships have their ups and downs, as did ours. Over the past several months, we’ve been trying to resolve some lingering business issues, but sometimes things just don’t work out.

I can’t even begin to express how much you guys mean to me. When I started, I had no idea what was coming, and I feel extremely lucky to have you in my life and do what I do for a living. You guys make me love my job, and I love you for that!!!

I’m NOT disappearing, though! My new show is called GeekBeat.TV at www.geekbeat.tv. I love technology and gadgets and exciting research projects from places like MIT, so don’t worry, you’ll still get your dose of tech news!

Please make sure you subscribe to the new show! I don’t usually beg you guys, but I do need every single one of you to change your subscriptions!! The first episode of GeekBeat.TV will be out very soon!

    Im here since day jan 2006 (remmeber when I spanish sub one of the episodes :P ) and I saw this comming after the divorce shocking announcement. I figure it that GBTV was doomed and I was just afraid nothing comes to replace but so we will have geekbeat no problem.

    Geekbrief meant a lot to me. I was initially sad when you announced the ending of Geekbrief after I learned from the Geekbeat.tv that you will be revision3 network I screamed. This is like TechTV being rebooted from some server room but this time it is better because it has you on board. Good luck working Kelvin and all the crew at Revision3.

    I’m sorry Cali, but your personal life isn’t something that bothers me, or really is any of my business, so frankly I’ll pay no attention to that matter.

    It’s purely from a professional point of view, but leaving Mevio and GBTV unannounced is disturbing to me. If GeekBeat is an interesting show, I’ll be sure to watch it. But it’s sad you’ve decided to commit professional seppuku. I was hoping to see both careers (Yours & Neals) succeed separately, and I still am, but I have a feeling someone who leaves a project/job/etc by announcing it on twitter, isn’t going to exactly inspire any future employers, regardless of the reason for leaving. I wish you the best and look forward to seeing GeekBeat, I just wish I was saying so under different circumstances.

    Sad to hear that. But sometimes good things must end to start better ones. You put more than one smile with GBTV on my face in the past, and I think it will happen again (maybe with GBTV instead?)

    Questions: why is not Mevio? why is that Revision3?. did you break up witm Mevio too?

    Its is totally legal to do practically the same podcast just with a name change? I mean for the Neal rights? even if he is not producer of Geekbeat the whole concept in which is made is the old geekbrief.

    I dont look for the dirt or drama on the subject i just wonder those things.

    I confess I came to GeekBrief mid way through your run and was immediately struck by your sheer energy and dedication. I have since followed you on lots of different media and feel enternally charmed by your intelligence and practical geekiness. Not sure of getting your hands dirty and admitting your mistakes means I for one will be following you on to GeekBeat.tv and anywhere else you care to lead me.

    I just got out the plane and while waiting for my connection flight I just saw/heard the sad news about the end of geekbrief.tv. Have been with you from day one and it is sad that it had to come to an end like this.

    But on the other hand, after some teardrops, there is a new star rising at the horizon we all can look for. So I cant wait for the 28 of June.

    So sorry to hear of your troubles with your partnership, but just like all the TechTV crew back in the day, its the Talent that matters, NOTHING ELSE. You’ll do GREAT in whatever venture you start next, we’ll all follow you. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that, we follow YOU, not Mevio. Mevio can try to put up a new geekbrief, but it will fail shortly thereafter, and you’ll have at least 99.95% of their customer base following you, not them. I’ve already deleted my geekbrief RSS feed, and added this one. I hope to see you back on the net-waves soon!

    You could go to revision3 or the Twit guys. Especially the Twit guys hired Tom Meritt and I’ve heard that they are hiring.

    Or to Next New Networks you can work something out.

    Or you can get a VPS server from GoDaddy and host your show there.

    Why are you saying “the final episode” mevio own the copyright for that name or what?

    Can you go into detail of what gone wrong? I want to know.

    Man when you divorce ,you divorce! My hunch is Cali got a little full of herself and decided she didn’t need Neal. Even in the tech world a little fame can go to ones head. Way to cut him out of the success he helped you create.

    I used to like your show when it was simple and didn’t look like every other show on the Internet.

    Wow that’s crazy! I’ve been a casual watcher since you and Neal filmed the show upstairs from where you worked and have always been appreciative of the Geekbrief brand. It’s always been there, it’s always reliable and it’s always great.

    I’ve been watching since the beginning and it’s now part of my morning ritual, make breakfast and watch GeekBrief on my AppleTV. I was watching your final episode yelling at the screen “if there are business problems take it to revision 3, don’t end it!”. And in a way that’s what’s happening so phew!!!

    *Whew!* I read your tweet about this being the LAST episode and immediately went into shock. What? No! Not Cali! Glad I clicked the tweet instead of just waiting to listen to the podcast on my iPod later… at least I know you’re not going away forever. Will the site stay up?? For archival of the old episodes? I’ve watched them all ( I think) but like to go back sometimes and look at how much things have changed in tech. :)

    Luria I have to say I really admire how professionally you have handled this transition. I’ve been watching since episode 1 and been an on/off again contributor; during non-election years. :)

    GeekBrief was among the first podcast that I ever subscribed to, and I always looked forward to watching the show. Your enthusiasm just makes me smile. There are some people who come through as honest and trustworthy and that is some of the qualities you personify, which is important if I am to trust someones opinion.

    GeekBrief was one of the shows that convinced me to jump off my “old media” career four years ago and give video podcasting a go. The last four years doing our knitting show have been incredible and we have GeekBrief at least partially to thank for that. When you and Neil started the show you had no experience producing video and I have to admit that you taught me how to think out of the box again and again as your show developed. GeekBrief was a tremendous accomplishment and I’m sad to see it end.

    started around brief 80 and have been hooked ever since. Have subscribed to the new show as your interludes lighten up even the most dreary day. You always make me think that one day i must visit dallas even if a brit in town now might be as welcome as a bp executive.

    Wow.. I watched with tears… my favorite podcast of all times has completed it’s run.
    Because of GBTV and you and Neal I switched to mac…I received my 1st video ichat call..(from you.. I was star struck w/ amazement that you’d call me), I began to tweet.. I began to blog and secured the domain SwitchingGranny (because you said it would be awesome), I became a lover of the internets and all things tech.. maybe this granny even became a geek.

    And biggest of all.. I had the privilege of meeting you because of your kindness and coming to Texas as a recipient of your marvelous hospitality and friendship.

    I watched the final episode of GBTV with genuine tears. My favorite podcast of all time is over. My life changed because of geekbrief.tv. As a result of GBTV I switched to mac, I got my 1st video iChat call (from Cali Lewis WOW), I secured the domain SwitchingGranny.com, I began blogging and I became a lover of the internets and all things tech! Hey this granny maybe even became a geek because of this podcast.

    Best of all I got to meet you guys. I was a recipient of Cali & Neal’s gracious hospitality for a week in Texas that I’ll never forget.

    I may not have been there since the first episode but I was first introduced to GeekBrief on my Nokia N800, before Apple had released the original iPhone and have probably watched every episode since.

    It pains me to think I wont be able to enjoy the 1000th episode when I honestly believed that there would be so many more than that.

    Like so many others I am amazingly sad over the demise of Geekbrief. I am not even sure that anyone will read this but Geekbrief has made a real difference to a geeky English guy who has few friends and has gone through a lot of the over the years but come to depend on an evening with Geekbrief. I just want you to know that you mean a lot to me and that it was all worth it. I miss you.

    I have watched your show for the last five years as my after work detox. I’m sorry to see the GeekBrief brand end, but I’m excited for the new GeekBeat brand! It’s still you, and it’s still shinny, happy, tech news!

    I hope that GeekBrief shows are offered in syndication, but we’ll see. The Mevio site has these ads thay repeat before each show, not that shinny or happy.

    As an outside observer who watched Geekbrief occasionally, I too am sad Luria/Cali and Neal are divorcing. Let me first say that I wish them both well, sorry that hey must part, but hope better pasture lay ahead. I pray too for their healing through this difficult period.

    However, to be honest, it was a very odd match to begin with. Cali is a stunningly beautiful, effervescent and bubbly personality and Neal is not. That is not to disparage him, I am sure he is a great guy. Cali is unusual in that most women like her are far from geeks and couldn’t care less about how tech stuff works – just that it does. This is what makes her so popular and why we all love her.

    She and Neal are Christians and getting married young probably were not fully aware of their differences – and good for them. After all, they both loved tech, both loved God and Cali probably was not that aware of how beautiful she was.

    The core fact of the matter is, however, and no matter how shallow it may sound, that it is very difficult, if not impossible, for a very beautiful person to stay happily married (or in LTR) with someone who is average looking. In most traditional constraints it is the beautiful woman being with the average or less than average looking guy. These relationships usually only work, and in fact, usually don’t even begin unless one of the following factors is present:

    1. The guy has money. This relationship is as old as time and will always be so. The hot babe hooks onto the loaded guy (often many times a lot older, i.e. “trophy wife”) because of his money. The guy’s attraction to her is obvious. However, that is not the case here as both came from humble backgrounds and created and built-up their business together.

    2. The guy, despite not being all that good looking, is nonetheless really cool. He knows how to dress, how to talk to women, he’s confident….a player. Women are attracted to confidence and its air can overcome what the guy lacks in pure aesthetics. This was probably in play here to some extent, but not fully. We geeks are generally a bit socially awkward and not fully confident with women. I don’t get that Neal was a cocky, socially confident guy nor do I think Luria would be attracted to this frequently superficial personality type. Neal was a sweet guy and she loved him but social interaction differences can cause problems.

    3. The woman is unaware or uninterested in her beauty. She wears minimal make-up and rarely dresses to impress men. While this may describe Luria, it clearly does not describe her alter ego Cali. Cali is a confident, take-charge woman who is fully ready to let her beauty and personality take her places that few others can go.

    So what happens here is that no matter how much the beauty loves the geek, no matter how much she may love his sweet nature, society treats them differently and ultimately takes them on separate paths. It doesn’t make her shallow or him resentful, it is simply a matter of social conditioning which can be very hard to overcome. I also believe that Neal was probably fairly reclusive, while Luria’s job as Cali was to be the center of the part. This can be problematic in a relationship as one party feels resentment while the other feels held back.

    Ultimately, it remains a sad chapter in their lives, but that is life, and like Cali said, it is not always what you expected. I do, however, wish them both well as they start new chapters.

    I moved a couple of months ago and misplaced my zune. In the mean time I did not have the time to keep up with my podcasts. Low and behold I finally located my zune, synced it. For the past two weeks I was wondering “why is geek brief not updating to my zune?” I have been with you since the first show and my iPod video. You were my introduction the the world of podcasts. I wish you much luck in your new venture and I will be downloading your new shows and catching up to your current one.
