NOTE: Video of what I talk about is at GeekBrief.TV.

We’ve all poked fun at Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, for running across the stage at an event screaming (video) what I imagine are meant to be motivational words. The last such event was the CES Keynote, where Ballmer talked about the success of Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, and said something to the effect of “We Bing! And we Bing! We Bing! Bing! Bing!” While most people I know think his tactics are silly and goofy, and a bit embarrassing, you have to admit…they’re memorable.

I tried Bing when it first came out, and I liked it. But that was it for me. Most of us are in the habit of Googling. “Google it” is the default phrase when talking about a search engine. I use the Google Chrome web browser, and googling something is as easy as typing in a web address. Before Chrome, I was using Firefox, where Google is the default search engine. Firefox offers users a choice of search engines by clicking on a drop down box, but Bing doesn’t even show up in those options. You have to choose “Manage Search Engines”, scroll through four pages of search engines you’ve never heard of in order to find and install Bing. It’s not easy to use Bing, and habits are hard to break. Bing’s biggest challenge to overcome is converting those habits.

This week, I went to a dinner at Central 214 in Dallas hosted by Bing to find out what they’re up to and where they’re headed. It’s part of my job, but I must say, I love my job when it involves delicious food! I learned a couple things about Bing, and got a better understanding of why someone would want to use it. Bing is all about discovery. I’ve heard that sales pitch before from Microsoft, but I didn’t quite get it. Let me explain.

If you go to Bing.com, you’ll see a different background picture every day. Think of this like Google’s changing logo, but with Bing, you can hover over parts of the photo to get more information. One day it was a picture of an Olympic snow skier, and Bing was sharing information about why skiers wear the pants they do…how the pants make them faster and better. Today, the picture is a line up of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Hovering over parts of the photo, I discovered videos of past Olympic events and got 2 minutes, 29 seconds of smile-on-my-face entertainment with the video below, called Canadian, Please.

Visual Search was the thing that stood out to the most when I tried Bing originally, and I was struck again at how useful it could be when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Imagine you saw someone using a camera while you were out shopping, and you were interested in buying it yourself, but you had no idea what it was. Bing’s visual search engine is intended to help you search for it by browsing photos of it, then clicking for more information. I gave it a try with a search for a dog I saw when I was in Atlanta last week. It was the cutest dog I’d ever seen (with the exception of my own, of course!), but I can’t remember what breed it is. Unfortunately, Bing left me hanging in this particular search.

While I was at the event, I asked you guys on Twitter for questions, and had Melissa Powell from the Bing team answer them on video. (Please forgive the background noise!) These are the questions you had:

Will Bing app be any different on the coming iPad? –@alainbosse

How can I set up a network for kids so they can use Bing but get safe results? Can it be done with a domain black/white list? –@MichaelAskew

What is Bing’s social search strategy? –@bceverly

Ask them about how they handle their users search results and how long they keep them? –@robbmcmahan

How will they integrate Bing, Windows Mobile 7, Hotmail search on the phone & web all at the same time/same search? –@mbl4889

Are the rumors true about Bing being the default on the iPhone?

Do they like puppies? –@RadioConelrad

Will I use Bing? I will from time to time, when I want to discover, but I can’t see it replacing my daily habits on Google. What about you? Do you Bing? Do you Bing, Bing, Bing?

He posts a new photo on his blog, StuckInCustoms.com, every day. I was having lunch with him before he headed off to New Zealand, and since he had his travel bags there ready to go, I wanted to take a peek! I love knowing what gadgets other people take with them. Perhaps it’s a bit selfish….I figure I might learn a thing or two! Check out the video below, and if you’re not familiar with HDR photography, take a look at his tutorial.

How many free desktop and mobile applications do you download and use on a regular basis? I know I use a lot. We all love free applications that improve our lives and make certain tasks simpler. But we also need to think about the developers who came up with the idea and put the effort into creating these applications. It takes a LOT of work to develop and support them. I try to always remember this and donate to the apps that I love.

My friend Scott Ellis is taking the idea of supporting developers of the apps you love and applying it to WordPress, which I know lots and lots of you use! WordPress developers put so much effort into creating and maintaining plugins and themes that make your website appealing for your visitors, and many of them don’t charge for their services. Scott is declaring March 1st “Support a WordPress Developer Day”. Well, I don’t think he’s actually calling it that, but he should! He’s issued a challenge to everyone to donate $5 to your favorite WordPress plugin developer. I’m going to take it a step further and suggest that if you can do more than $5, do it! And, why not support WordPress Theme Developers as well?

If you decide to participate, leave a comment. You don’t have to say how much you’re contributing, but active and open participation in something encourages others to join in.

I’ll update this post on March 1st with which plugins and/or themes I’m supporting!

I have to say, the best ones usually come from word of mouth, and Words with Friends is a perfect example. Words with Friends is basically scrabble for the iPhone/iPod Touch, but what makes it fun is the ability to play with your friends. Here’s how it works:

Once you invite a friend to play, then you lay down your tiles to make the first word. The game will then alert your friend that it’s his turn. He’ll make his move on his own time and then send it back to you. A full game could take a week or two, depending on how often each of you plays. I love the fact that it doesn’t have to take much time. You make one move per active game at a time, and put the game away. You don’t fall into the trap of an addicting game that can go on and on and on for hours! There is a free version, supported by ads, and a paid version for $2.99. Give it a try, I think you’ll like it!

The Rules

What do you have to do to win? Create a short video (60 seconds or less) that captures the spirit of Macworld 2010. There are no other guidelines. This is all up to your creativity, so have fun with it! Once you’ve thought about your idea, and shot it, you’ll need to upload it to the DroboMacworld Flickr group to actually be entered for the contest.

On March 1, 2010, Data Robotics will announce the winner on their Twitter page, so I suggest following them and even adding them to your SMS updates so that you’re not left wondering if you were a winner!

Official details are here.

Disclaimer

I get questions about this all the time, so I want to save both you and me some time! If you guys have been around GeekBrief.TV for a little while, you know how much I love my Drobos. I fell in love with the product when the company first launched, and as I often do with technology companies that excite me, I developed a relationship with them. They soon became a sponsor for the show and I was proud to be a part of some introductory videos for their website. As a lot of you have noticed, they’re not a current sponsor, but it’s not for a lack of desire on either end. It’s just a matter of pure business. I love them and work with them from time to time, and judging this contest is one of those times!

So go start thinking about your video! What will you do to capture the spirit of Macworld 2010? I look forward to watching your entries!

Over the weekend, I decided to dig in to the mess and reorganize ALL my data!! I wanted to make it as easy as possible, so I hooked up all 12 drives at once. Yep, that’s right….12 drives at…the…same…time!

I expect I’ll get some questions about what kind of drives I have in this stack, so here’s a list, from left to right, top to bottom:

WD MyBook

LaCie

G-Drive

G-Drive Mini (highly recommend these drives!)

LaCie Rugged

Drobo Firewire

Drobo USB

Drobo Pro

G-Drive Mini (2)

Acomdata (very old!)

Drobo USB

We were lucky to have Philip Nelson from NewTek bring out an HD Tricaster for the event. It was the first non-NewTek live stream with an HD Tricaster, and it worked perfectly!

If you weren’t able to make it, we’ll be streaming the event throughout the holidays at CaliLive.TV. Congratulations to @BachmanFamily, who won a Drobo during the stream!

Thanks to John P., the official Party Photographer for spending the evening snapping away.

What are the Best Wireless Headphones (for TV and Radio)?

And the Consensus Is…

Keep in mind, I requested feedback on headphones that were NOT bluetooth or infrared. By far, the most suggested wireless headphones were from Sennheiser. Everyone appeared to be using different Sennheiser models, and this is one of those things that will depend on your budget, but any of the Sennheiser wireless headphones should be the way to go, especially their HD models.

Wireless still presents a lot of problems, so it made me laugh that a lot of the responses I got were “wireless headphones that WORK?”

What is “And the Consensus Is…”?

From time to time, I’ll ask you guys what the best product/service is to accomplish a particular task. Then I’ll gather up the responses from Twitter and Facebook and post the answer. When you need to find a product to make your life better, use the search box at the top, or browse through the “And the Consensus Is…” tag. If you want to recommend a topic, just ping me on Twitter or Facebook.

If you’re not familiar with our Christmas Parties, let me fill you in…

Geoff Smith

The first thing you need to know is who Geoff Smith is. A lot of you will know him and have enjoyed his music, and if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably heard his jingles. He’s an amazingly talented musician who made his mark on the new media world by creating jingles for different podcasters. Some examples are Drobo, iJustine, and TWiT. He’s also written and performed songs that make geeks dance, like Digg the Code.

One evening in 2007, Geoff tweeted that he was in his studio working on a new album, and he had Ustream going. Neal and I joined the chatroom at Ustream and I tweeted that I was watching Geoff work. Pretty soon, we had a crowd of people watching and talking in the chatroom, and Geoff wasn’t getting ANY work done! Someone asked if he could sing one of his songs so he did, then someone else asked if he knew the words to a Beatles song, and he started singing it. And that’s how the Geoff Smith Late Night Concerts began. It was pretty incredible to watch Geoff play the piano, sing, take requests from the chatroom (he knows pretty much every song ever made) and in addition to that, watch the chatroom explode with excitement. People loved “singing” along in the form of chat. It’s hard to explain, but when the night ended, people said it was one of the best experiences they’d ever had.

It became a regular thing. Geoff would jump on Ustream, everyone would join him and tweet they were there. Amber Mac, iJustine, and Leo Laporte have all showed up and enjoyed it as well.

Annual Streaming Christmas Party

Last year, we went to Nashville where Geoff lives and plays at the Big Bang Bar, a dueling piano bar. We set up all our cameras and lights, brought our Tricaster along, called in extra bandwidth for the night, and went live. 80 people were there in person to watch Geoff do his thing and request songs. About 7,500 people joined us on the Ustream throughout the night, and thousands more watched the recorded version as we streamed the concert during the holiday season. It was a night we’ll never forget!

Christmas Party 2009

This year, Geoff is joining us to do it all again! Everyone’s invited to the live stream, and we encourage you to spread the word so it’s a more dynamic experience!

The party will be December 22nd at 9:00 PM EST, 8:00 PM CST, and 6:00 PM PST (that’s 2:00 AM GMT, December 23rd). Bring your smile, bring your song requests and hook up your computer to good speakers!

Join the video and chatroom at CaliLive.TV

Switching Granny

In addition to the live stream, we’ll have some local friends here at the house joining in. We would love to be able bring Switching Granny (the official grandmother of GeekBrief.TV) and her husband, Tommy, back into town for the Christmas Party. It’ll cost $1200 for the flight. Dave Peterson, who is flying in from Seattle, has offered to cover their hotel. If anyone in the Geek Brief family wants to help make a grandmother’s holiday, email me, @reply me on Twitter, or leave a comment below.

I say I love bread because I’m half Italian. Neal says it’s because I’m human. Saturday, I asked Twitter which type of flour to use for Banana Nut Bread. I’ve seen recipes that call for All Purpose, Cake and Whole Wheat flour. The consensus was to use All Purpose Flour, but I wasn’t ready to let the question rest. I was intrigued.

I set out to do a little experiment with four combinations of flour:

1) 1/2 Whole Wheat Flour, 1/2 All Purpose Flour
2) 1/2 Cake Flour, 1/2 All Purpose Flour
3) 1/2 Buckwheat Flour, 1/2 All Purpose Flour
4) Only All Purpose Flour

I used the recipe from the Food Network, as follows:

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

11/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2 eggs

5 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon lemon juice

5 large bananas

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup pecan or walnut halves

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 1/2 by 5 1/2-inch loaf pan.

In a large mixing bowl, sift flour, whole-wheat flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Reserve.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, food processor, or blender, add eggs, butter, buttermilk, lemon juice, bananas, sugar, and salt.

Mix or blend until smooth. Slowly add dry ingredients. Fold in nuts. Pour batter into pan and bake 1 hour and 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

The Results

I think I will continue to edit and adjust the above recipe. I’ve never used Buttermilk before, so I might try this particular recipe without Buttermilk. And I’m not sure the lemon juice did anything for the bread, so this definitely won’t be final recipe I use.

I didn’t like the Buckwheat Flour very much, and I kind of liked the Whole Wheat. Neal liked the Buckwheat more than the Whole Wheat. Neither of us could tell much of a difference between the All Purpose and the Cake Flour, except that the All Purpose batch seemed to be a bit smoother.

I’m not surprised, but I agree with the majority of people on Twitter. All Purpose is the way to go! Here are some pictures…

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about productivity. I think we can all agree that email decreases productivity if we’re checking it all the time, so for the past several months, I’ve made huge strides to make it less of an interruption, and that’s a good thing, BUT there’s one thing that keeps me from staying out of my email when I should be doing other things.

When I’m expecting a response from someone regarding an important issue, I tend to check more often because I want to act on it quickly. Unfortunately, the moment I check to see if it’s there, I get interrupted by other emails that seem important at the time, but….are they really? No, not necessarily.

SO! It would be awesome if there was an option in the Gmail filtering process that would allow me to set up an SMS alert when a certain person sends an email. Since there isn’t, the only thing I can think of is to set the filter up so it copies the email to a completely separate email address, one specifically for this purpose, and then set up my phone to audibly alert me when I get email in that inbox.

This is a work around, and obviously not the most elegant solution. Outside of convincing Google to offer this option in filters, does anyone have any other ideas?

He worked with almost every medium available to him throughout his life…paint, sculpture, charcoal, crosshatching, film, etc. I always admired his work and have always been a total daddy’s girl, but never felt like I acquired that particular gene.

It wasn’t until I got the Canon 5D Mark II that I was even interested in trying. I played with it the first six months, but in the last six months, I’ve really been getting into it and interested in learning more and doing more with photography. I became aware of something called HDR, and a photographer at the top of the HDR space, Trey Ratcliff. If you’re not familiar with HDR, it stands for High Dynamic Range. It’s a process that combines a series of pictures taken at different shutter speeds. You wind up with a very contrasty, dynamic photo. You can get more information about HDR from Trey’s HDR Tutorial.

One day, Trey emailed me letting me know I could use his pictures for GeekBrief.TV if I wanted. Wow! THE Trey Ratcliff I thought! Cool. So we did. The vibrant photos you’ve seen in the background on the show are from his collection StuckInCustoms.com. He actually has a great story that shows off the power of social media, but that’s another post. We happened to be traveling to New York at the same time a couple weeks ago, so he told me he’d give me a lesson in shooting HDR. We met in Times Square and I nervously took my first several sets of HDR-ready pictures.

This past weekend, I bribed Trey with the promise of homemade popovers (how could he resist even if he wanted to?) and he taught me the most important part of HDR…the post processing. I no longer have a camera, since my 5D Mark II was stolen in New York, but I’ll be getting a new one, when I decide which one I want. I just hope I don’t forget everything he taught me by the time I get a new camera!

Companies who simplify technology get my attention because simplification means better lives for people beyond the realm of Geekdom. The first Drobo brought the benefits of redundant storage to people who would never invest the time to learn to administer a RAID array, and eliminated the hassle for the rest of us. Drobo was a hit from the start, but the first Drobo left power users wanting more. The first Drobo was USB only and it was slow. The second generation Drobo added Firewire 800 and changed the lives of photographers and video producers who have an insatiable need for fast, abundant storage. We started to enjoy the benefits of Drobo’s redundant storage when editing video stored on the second gen Drobo with Firewire, but we still needed more space.

Earlier this year Data Robotics launched the Drobo Pro. The need for something like Drobo Pro is huge and demand has been strong. Photographers, video producers and small businesses need the extra security provided by RAID, but often don’t have the IT expertise or help to manage it. Drobo Pro meets the needs of professionals. Drobo Pro meets the needs of people with general storage and backup needs, but what about serious amateur photographers and video producers?

Today, Data Robotics introduces Drobo S. It has 5 drive bays and can protect data even if two drives fail simultaneously. It has USB 2.0, Firewire 800 and eSATA. Filled with 2TB SATA hard drives, Drobo S provides 7.3TB of redundant data protection. The Drobo S is for sale starting today for $799 without drives.

I’ve become friends with the Data Robotics team and they are letting me give away a Drobo S. I’ll be giving it away to a random Twitter follower sometime in December, so to be eligible for the giveaway, follow me at twitter.com/calilewis. I will use twitRand.com to randomly pick a winner.

When we started GeekBrief.TV in 2005, there were two types of people involved in new media, as both content producers and viewers/listeners. One camp of people thought podcasting and blogging should be a hobby, something people did purely out of passion. The other camp saw new media and realized that this was the beginning of a whole new world, a new way of getting information and content, and the beginning of a new kind of business. A new kind of business that would succeed because we were passionate and loved it.

I have always been very open about sponsorships. Viewers know what I’m promoting because I love it and when I’m being paid to promote something. I never accept sponsorships that I don’t think have some value to my audience, and there are times when my love for a company has led to getting a paid sponsorship, like with Drobo. I loved and promoted Drobo long before they became a sponsor of GeekBrief.TV. I knew it was a good fit for my viewers, and thousands of you have confirmed it.

In the new media business, income doesn’t come from just one source. Most of us making money in this space have several income streams, or are at least working on that. The advertising business is fickle, and we can’t rely on that alone. This leads me to the reason for this post.

There has been a lot of talk and controversey about whether Twitter users should include ads in their feed. Is it right? Is it misleading? Will Twitter followers abandon people who do it?

At first, I stayed far away from it. I was honestly a little scared of how my followers would respond. I’ve been quietly sitting back and watching for almost a year, carefully considering all opinions and views. The bottom line is this. I work hard at building my business and my brand. For four years, Neal and I have worked pretty much 6-7 days a week to build a viable business, and in order to grow, it requires some risk. In the next year, we expect to have some growth opportunities that will enable us to hire other people. In order to kick everything to the next level, I’ll either have to look for outside investors or find some creative ways to make enough cash to grow.

I’ve taken the step to include ads in my Twitter feed. I’m all about transparency, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. You’ll be able to tell a difference between ads and regular tweets by the hashtag #ad or #sponsor or #spons or something similar. Here’s my promise to you. I will only accept ones that I believe to be relevant, funny or interesting. I’ve already turned down several offers, one of which was a vibrating MP3 player. Don’t worry, my brand is still my brand and I won’t give up who I am just for a bit of extra cash!

In the holiday spirit, any sponsored tweets I do between Thanksgiving and Christmas will go to my favorite charity, Heifer International. Heifer focuses on giving people in third world countries the ability to change and be in control of their own future by providing them with livestock. They can use cows for milk, water buffalos to help plant more rice than they can by hand, chickens for protein or trade, etc.

Let me take this chance to thank you all for being such supportive and wonderful people. I’m reminded every day how awesome you guys are!

We’re finally home after the three week road trip! After Salt Lake City, we got stuck on our way to our next stop, Denver. They had a big storm and the major highways were closed, so we had to take a different route, through Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. The back roads aren’t what you want to take when you’re in a hurry (as we were), but they sure can be fun! You see things that most people don’t get to see, and I love that feeling. Of course, I don’t like to experience anything that I can’t then share with you guys, so here we go…

We stopped in Evanston, Wyoming last night because the route we were taking was closed due to snow. We stopped at one of the last pet friendly hotels we knew about and decided to see what happens.

Today (Friday), Denver and most Colorado roads are open (thank goodness!), but I-80 at Rawlins heading Eastbound is still closed. We’re a couple hours away from Rawlins, and it may open up by the time we get there, but this is the alternative route I’m looking at. It looks like it’ll only be 3 hours difference from the original route through Cheyenne and Denver.

So…who wants to play navigator? Have any different route suggestions? Other than making us go completely off route just for a meetup in New York City (we’ll get to NY again soon!), is there something we’re missing? If we’re off track, help guide us through our route over the next couple days. We just want to get home ASAP!

I’ll be tweeting where we’re going and welcome suggestions at Twitter.com/calilewis.

We’re on a three week road trip, as you’ve probably noticed from my recent blog posts and tweets. Usually when we’re on the road, we like to stop somewhere along the side of the road and shoot episodes of GeekBrief.TV. It’s worked out really well in the past, but this time around it hasn’t been easy due to weather conditions, so we’ve been stuck shooting in our hotel rooms.

We were pretty disappointed on Tuesday as we looked and looked for a place to shoot, and by the end of the day, we decided we’d need to shoot in whatever hotel room we stayed at. We chose a Best Western in Mountain Home, Idaho. We tend to stay at La Quintas or Best Westerns because they accept pets without outrageous fees. Mid-priced hotels across the country are upgrading their decors, but most Best Westerns are kind of behind the curve. This is only the second one we’ve stayed at that’s been upgraded, but it’s by far the best. The broadband up speed was terrible, though, and that’s a really important part of what we need at a hotel in order to upload our shows on the road.

Below is a look at our mobile studio when we’re shooting in a hotel room, and a few other pictures of the upgraded Best Western. We’re using a lot of the equipment from our permanent studio, but we bring along less lights and forgo the bluescreen.

Oh, and yes that’s me cooking on the kitchen sink! It’s a new gadget I’m playing with. It pays for itself in 10 nights by saving us money since we’re eating in rather than out, and I’ve found it to be really nice for cooking some soup while I’m sick on the road.

Over the weekend, we went to two museums, The Museum of Flight and the Science Fiction Museum. Here are some of my favorite pictures from that day, and you can see all of them on my SmugMug account, specifically the Science Fiction Gallery and the Museum of Flight Gallery.

On my way out of Portland, Oregon, we stopped by Voodoo Doughnuts 2 to try their Maple Bacon Bar, and invited anyone who was insane enough to be up at 7:00 AM to join us. My Twitter friends said I had to try Voodoo, and I follow orders!

The Maple Bacon Bar is a donut with maple glaze and a couple pieces of bacon thrown on top. It pretty much tasted like I expected it to. It was good! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and looking at all the possibilities in the donut window more, I think. There were donuts with M&Ms, marshmellows, Captn’ Crunch and Oreos on top. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the meetup! Here are a few pictures, and you can see more on my SmugMug account.

I just left the Blogworld/New Media Expo in Las Vegas. Neal and I spoke on the last day about Video Tips & Tricks, and I was able to attend a couple sessions plus Chris Brogan’s keynote.

Andy Walker, Podcasting 101

I met Andy Walker and Sean Carruthers on the set of Call For Help with Leo Laporte when I was filling in for Amber Mac for three months after she moved on. These guys are awesome! Check out Lab Rats and the Butterscotch network.

Andy’s session was “Podcasting 101″. It was a good overview for anyone who wants to get into producing video for the web. He covered the basics and helped people understand what to do and what to avoid.

Rob Walch, Interviews

Rob Walch is from Podcast 411. He’s one of the early podcasters. If you know the TV show “Inside the Actors Studio”, Podcast 411 is similar. I loved Rob and his show from the moment I heard him. In his session, he went over equipment, software and stressed that with audio interviews, editing is your friend! He also gave tips on how to make people feel comfortable before an interview and how to deal with awkward “non-answers” during the interview.

Chris Brogan Keynote

Chris Brogan’s keynote was fantastic. He’s very inspirational and is aiming to help businesses become more personal and connect with their customers. You can see my interview with him here, where we talk about some of the key points from the Keynote.

Photowalk

John P. organized a Photowalk on Saturday evening. I love my 5D Mark II and am always trying to get better, so I jumped at the chance to go to Old Las Vegas (Freemont Street) and take some pictures. The group was awesome and we all had a great time. Here are some pictures, and you can see the rest of mine at SmugMug. As we all know, Photoshop on the desktop is a very complicated program, so I was intrigued to find out how they were going to make an iPhone app out of it.

All adjustments happen by sliding your finger across the screen. It’s extremely simple and intuitive. You can choose from the following choices:

Crop
Rotate
Flip
Exposure (lighten or darken)
Saturation
Tint
Black & White
Sketch
Soft Focus

Click the Read button for more…

You can choose predefined settings: Vibrant, Pop, Border, Vignette Blur, Warm Vintage, Rainbow. You can undo and redo changes, then once you’re done, save the photo to your Photo Library or upload it to Photoshop.com. The app itself it free.

Here are a couple examples of my dog Zoe. The original is on the left, the modified version on the right.

What is Woopra?

If you’ve been watching GeekBrief.TV since last March, you’ll probably remember an episode called “Introducing Woopra…You’re Gonna Want It”. I was speaking at WordCamp Dallas, where I met John Pozadzides, CEO of Woopra . He showed me an application developed by Elie Khoury and Jad Younan, two brilliant developers from Lebanon. I quickly realized that anyone who has a blog or website could love this app. It gives website owners a very visual view at your stats, AND it’s all live. When you use other stats programs, like Google Analytics, you don’t see how many visitors you got until the next day. With Woopra, when you post an article or tweet a link to your site, you can see right then how many people are responding, and you can tweak your marketing efforts based on what you see. I’ve personally learned a lot about traffic from Woopra, and I recommend it for anyone who has a website. WARNING: it’s addictive to watch those live stats!

If you’re not familiar with Woopra, here’s the episode from a year and a half ago. Please note that the application has developed, so the interface is slightly different.

Woopra is out of beta!

Until now, Woopra has been in beta and you’ve needed an invite code to begin using it. They have come out of beta and now anyone can sign up for an account! There are a few things you need to know about, so check out the announcement video below (I’m in it) and the post over on the Woopra blog.

Paid Accounts & Invite Codes

We all love free, and the guys at Woopra want to keep it free for the majority of users, but as I always say, when you use an application or service that’s free and it enhances your life, it’s important to support those products. When I don’t feel like shelling out money, even though I love an application, I try to remember that I wouldn’t want to do something on an ongoing basis for free.

If you only need the basic service (free), and don’t have an account yet, they’ll be announcing something about free invites, but I don’t know when, so keep an eye out for that news!

You can sign up for Woopra at www.woopra.com.

Woopra Twitter
Woopra Blog
John P. (CEO) on Twitter
Elie Khoury (developer) on Twitter

And, by the way, just so we’re all clear, I know I talk about Woopra a lot, but please know that I don’t get paid by Woopra. I just love the service!

I haven’t yet seen the commercial on TV, but @kevok2008 sent a link to it on YouTube. I found about it from you guys on Twitter and wasn’t aware of it until then. I was just going to say “cool” and move on with my life, until @jeffmccord sent me a screenshot that showed one of the tweets.

“8 hours of conference calls, then I get to work on my projects. Awesome.”

I had to laugh because I seriously don’t think that’s my tweet. I have never had 8 hours of conference calls in my life, and well, it doesn’t sound like me. I just had to share!

Now, to clarify, I DID write the other tweet that shows up in the commercials. Something about driving back from Nashville. THAT one is definitely mine!

UPDATE: Thanks to @csbrockman, the actual tweet was…

“Finally home (hit traffic) and am packing for the Nashville trip. Looking foward to bed.”

I like both for different reasons, so I switch between them while I’m out and about. We’ve known it was coming, and Friday, Atebits released Tweetie 2, with tons of feature updates. So many, in fact, that they decided not to release it as a free upgrade for existing Tweetie users. Now, before you get upset by this, let’s take a look at what they did.

Landscape Mode

Tweetie 2 takes advantage of the accelerometer to give you your tweets in landscape mode. This works just as smoothly as you’d want. Some apps don’t seem to do well at this consistently, but I’ve had no delay when using landscape mode and the keyboard.

Persistence

Whatever you’re doing when you close the app (or when the phone rings), Tweetie 2 will remember and land you right back to that spot when you relaunch it. For example, if you’re looking at the @replies column, you’ll be returned to the @replies column, and even better, to the exact tweet in the timeline. If you’re composing a message, your draft will still be there ready for you to finish it.

Read on for more features…

Updating & Browsing

On the first version of Tweetie, you tapped a refresh button to update your feed. In the new version, you just pull down all the way on the page with your finger (as if you’re scrolling to get to the top of the page) and let go.

As you’re browsing tweets and you get new updates in one of the other columns, you’ll get a notification glow so you can hop on over and check your other messages.

You can filter your columns by searching for a keyword when looking for something specific.

When you view a users profile, I love that you can view their @replies, so if someone asks a question, and you want to know the answer, you can see what responses that person is getting immediately.

One major downside for me is the lack of groups. I’ve come to rely on my groups with TweetDeck!

They added threads to your DM messages. You’ll see messages from the same person grouped together. I love threaded conversations!

Composing

The compose box has a lot more options. By tapping the character countdown box, you get six options: Camera, Photo Library, Geotag, Usernames, Hashtags, and Shrink URLs. Before, all you had in the Compose box was Camera and Geotag. You can save multiple drafts, which is always nice to have.

When attaching photos to a tweet, I don’t like that I still don’t have access to the link itself. Tweetie just attaches the pic and takes away the appropriate number of characters. I feel strongly that a user should have the ability to place the link to a picture where you want it in the tweet, whether that’s at the beginning, middle or end of your words.

Other

Tweetie 2 adds an offline mode so you can read when you’re not connected to the internet. You can even tweet, and when you connect again, Tweetie will send off your messages.

You can edit your profile directly from Tweetie 2. It’s a nice feature, although I’m not sure how often people will use it. They also added the ability to translate tweets and the ability to email a tweet.

Do I recommend it?

At first I wasn’t sure I liked it as much as the first version, but within 15-20 minutes I was sold. I really like the new version and features. It’s worth paying the $ 2.99 to upgrade!

Okay, it actually took me a while to write this review because I just kept wanting to play the game instead of putting it down after a while to actually write!

Most likely, you’re familiar with the SkeeBall game. Roll a ball up a ramp and try to land it in one of the holes, each numbered with a different score. The harder the shot, the more points you earn. After a game, you’ll get rewarded tickets that you can then redeem for prizes.

You throw the ball with a flick of your finger. You can also use your thumb. If you’re brave enough to throw a curve ball into the mix, just tilt the iPhone.

As soon as I started racking up the tickets, most of the less expensive items disappeared and more expensive items appeared, like a clock and headphones. But, they were all too expensive for the tickets I had, and all I could buy were about 25 donuts. Each time you go into redeem your tickets, you’re shown a different collection of items.

I did experience some crashing and freezing, but never while I was playing. Hopefully their next update will fix these crashes.

Hopefully, the next time I take my nephew to Chuck E. Cheese, my Skeeball skills will be perfectly polished!
