Adobe’s iPhone Frustrations

iphone-flash-messageWow! Adobe isn’t keeping its frustration with Apple a secret anymore. We’ve heard over and over that Adobe wants Flash to be available on the iPhone, but Apple doesn’t seem to be budging. Now, if you try to load something that requires Flash and go to download, you’ll see this message that points to Apple as the reason you can’t watch that Flash video.

“Flash Player not available for your device. Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch.”

    I want flash on the iPhone bad. I know Apple is pushing for HTML 5 & Quicktime and Flash uses a lot of battery but that excuse doesn’t cut it anymore. Yes, I know flash has a lot of vulnerabilities but why can’t Apple ask Adobe (publicly if necessary) to make a special version for the iPhone?

    It is the ONE technology that regular customers (not techies) want. Not many people care about multi tasking or things like this but we all want flash. There are a lot of really cool Android phones coming out, and while they don’t compare to the iPhone in terms of usability and speed they have a) free turn by turn directions and b) flash coming to android next year. I still don’t think regular customers will switch over, but the amount of Verizon customers that will jump to AT&T will become smaller & smaller.

    I hate the way Flash has a tendency if pinning my CPU and my laptop’s temp goes over 100 degrees Celsius sometimes. That can’t be good.

    It’s frustrating not having even a basic implementation of flash but I can understand the reluctance to allow it on the iPhone. Flash is a fairly mature technology but it’s still poorly implemented and inefficient. The CPU usage on Windows and especially Mac platforms if terrible.

    Its all about Flash being able to execute arbitrary non-apple audited code. This means its a ‘HUGE’ vector for problems on the iPhone that just aren’t there now.

    Yes its a pain, but I value a stable and reliable device over having Flash and so do Apple. I hope Apple stick to their guns on this one.

    Multi-tasking though is a different matter. Not being able to run a couple of things in the background is a real pain. For example, driving along with my Nav program on, and a call comes in… oops missed that turn as my Nav app has to quit to answer the phone… makes the app useless.

    It will come in the iPhone OS 4 I am sure, along with a raft of restrictions and auditing hoops for developers.

    I’d bet 99.99% of iPhone users don’t care about ‘mature technologies’, ‘poor implementations’, ‘inefficiencies’ ‘running non-apple code’, etc. etc. All they want (myself included) is to be able to see flash content on the iPhone. So what if it uses more battery? Let me decide; not Apple.

    Oops. What am I saying. I forget that the price you pay for Apple technology is Apple’s business practice(s). Why oh why can’t someone port flash so it works on a jailbroken phone? Decompile/recompile anyone?

    Sounds like Apple has been having a rough go at it with this release. I wonder if they pushed it to beat the competition to the market – or if ATT pushed it before a VZ deal is announced
